I don't dispute your argument, and in fact agree with it, but can see how the masses can be easily misled. If I remember correctly, there was a report done by Bachman & Anderson some years ago which tried to show a direct correlation between exposure to violence via the media, primarily video games, and actual physical violence. This received significant press coverage since it was in part funded by those who wished to validate the correlation. However, there are those like Stephen King who have publicly expressed their belief that fiction can be a form of release, including video game violence, but don't seem to receive the same amount of press coverage. The problem is that the media loves to portray the negative because drama sells, and there will always be a small minority that will detract from the greater whole.

Pedophilia is not simply a contagion that one can be exposed to and catch like the common cold or flu. Some might think of it as an abhorrent behavior. However, it was not too long ago in accordance with history where women at ages of twelve and younger would be married off to middle-aged men. When the rules of a society changes, so to does the expectation of behavior on its citizens. When specific individuals choose not to conform, then those people are deemed to be abnormal, and even possibly dangerous. Unfortunately, the portrayal by those who believe themselves to be role models of current society is that it is the content and not the form which dictates abnormality. Most pedophiles prefer images of real children, and not necessarily manga. However, at some point in time there will definitely be some pedophile who is caught who will indeed possess loli and/or shota, and that individual will allow the media and others to present that form of manga as having a negative affect on children and adults.

A child who exhibits a schizotypal personality disorder might one day grow up to be an otaku, but could also be willing to believe in magic and dragons. Being an otaku isn't necessarily a bad thing, nor is wanting to believe in a fantasy that could make your life more pleasant. It is when one goes to the extreme of becoming delusional and acting out in a manner that disregards the welfare of ones self or others that it is then taken too far. So it is not simply the availability or exposure that makes someone a pedophile, but their willingness to act out the behavior. If a child acts out in violence, and enjoys violent video games, the problem is not in the game, but in the underlying behavior. Why does that child not seem to possess any self-control? Sadly, the majority of the public wants quick answers, and someone to blame other than themselves. In the end many can become ostracized who simply choose not to conform to the standards of others because they are already in possession of their own set of standards which in some cases are even higher than that of the surrounding society.

With all that said, I'm not a loli or shota obsessed fan. Some of it turns me off, but I understand that some artists are just attempting to push boundaries, or fulfill a niche. If I don't like something, I don't read it. Unfortunately that's not true for others, and should some day a time come when a pedophile be caught possessing loli and/or shota, it is quite possible that it will be the fans and artists who will also be seen as guilty through association; even when there is none.

I have always viewed my hentai collections as being something of a cartoon fantasy. Just because I may find the dick girls doujins to be hot doesn't mean the real world one will not make me puck. The same concept can be said for lolicon, because most of the people who vist this site want to see cartoon character do the nasty. If there are those that actually do that stuff in real life, I doubt that any hentai site is morally responsible. I would have to wonder how someone who is interested in incest can think there morally bound to call a genre out?

If I could make myself the devil's advocate here for a moment, I agree that reading lolicon doesn't make you act like a pedophile. However, the fantasy is there, just as one can have the fantasy of being a wizard when reading Harry Potter. But being a wizard is completely out of reach. For that matter, murder isn't out of reach, but violence is more accepted by North American society then sex is. I'm not criticising lolicon, far from it, but I do agree that there is a fantasy there and if one goes as far then to condemn the fantasy itself, as society does for pedophilia, then I can understand the point of view of that individual (even if I don't agree with it).

In the end, whether you accuse or respond, I'm of the opinion that keeping your cool is the better way to act.

No reading does not make you a offender, if you have to read about a dictator for a school related project does that in turn make you like that dictator not at all.
